Apple Day – October 2015

A selection of apples

I love spending time at the Rural Life Museum in Gressenhall (Norfolk). I was there with my family on Apple Day. There were many different apples on display to look at and for tasting.

Health benefits of apple :

They contain pectin, a type of soluble fibre that has been linked to lower levels of LDL or “bad” cholesterol. They can keep you filling full and they also provide some vitamin C and antioxidants. So it is no surprise that apples have earned their reputation of “keeping the doctor away”.

Here is a recipe :

Compote de Pommes

4 or 5 apples, 2 or 3 tablespoon sugar, vanilla essence (if you want), water

Peel the apples, cut them in quarter or cubes. place them in the pan, add a little water, add 2 or 3 tablespoon of sugar and the vanilla essence. Cook on high for a few minutes ; it will bubble up and then remove from the heat. Stir and leave it to cool down. You can also put it through the blender for a smoother finish.
